Nicole Humphries and Samantha Humphries, junior sisters at Flower Mound High in Texas and members of the national record indoor 4xMile Relay that clocked 19:37.78 at New Balance Nationals Indoor in March at The Armory in New York along with being part of UIL 6A state championship teams in cross country as well as track and field, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Jaguars returning to California to participate in the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS to compete Sept. 16 in the girls sweepstakes race at Great Park in Irvine. They reflect on Flower Mound winning Sept. 3 at the Marcus Coach T Invitational and defeating 6A rival Southlake Carroll, which will also be returning to the Woodbridge Classic for the sweepstakes competition. The sisters examine the success of Texas programs at the Woodbridge Classic, including Flower Mound finishing second last year by a 124-130 margin behind Newbury Park High of California, after Southlake Carroll ran to a 129-129 result in 2019 against Buchanan High of California and lost on a sixth-runner tiebreaker. The siblings analyze the depth of the lineup this season, including the improvements of sophomores Alexandra Fox and Ava Cole, in addition to junior Natalie Spangher. They revisit how much was learned last year competing in cross country and track with Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Year and current Oklahoma State freshman Natalie Cook, who won the titles at both the Garmin RunningLane Championships and the Eastbay National Championships. They share how meaningful the experience was competing in New York and teaming with Cook and Fox to capture the 4xMile title and produce the national record, along with how significant it was to showcase the program's distance depth to be able to contribute to the UIL 6A state track and field championship. The sisters speak about the motivation gained from a seventh-place finish at the RunningLane Championships last year, and their excitement to square off against several programs they raced in Alabama again as part of the Woodbridge Classic sweepstakes, as well as giving credit to Flower Mound coach Andrew Cook for creating so many competitive opportunities and helping the Jaguars peak during the postseason. They also share how profound it would be to become the first Texas girls program to secure the Woodbridge Classic sweepstakes title in meet history, along with racing for the individual win.
